Norristown area elementary school students will be treated to the annual Holiday Extravaganza at Ursinus College as part of the America Reads and ACLAMO tutoring programs Dec. 6 in Wismer Lower Lounge.
The event, coordinated by Kimberly Quintero (student coordinator of America Reads and a Bonner participant), brings together students from the Christian Network Outreach Church and ACLAMO after-school programs and the approximately 34 Ursinus students who tutor them Monday through Friday in Norristown. After enjoying dinner together, the students and their Ursinus student mentors will decorate stockings and cookies, make holiday ornaments and cards. The students received gifts that have been donated.
The mission of the America Reads tutoring program, directed by Paulette Patton, is to inspire young students to achieve through the example of their mentors. A college education may seem out of reach to many, but a goal of the program is that interaction with Ursinus students will motivate the young students and make their dreams seem more tangible. The visit to Ursinus also provides the group with the rare opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a college campus.
Transportation, food, and financial assistance were generously donated in order to make the event possible. The tutoring initiative between Ursinus, Norristown and students is entering its 15th year.
