Division III Values Affirmed in Chronicle Letter

A letter in The Chronicle of Higher Education written by Swarthmore College President Rebecca Chopp on behalf of all Centennial Conference school presidents praises the values of Division III athletics. The mission of the Conference, the letter notes, states in part: “Intercollegiate athletic programs are an integral part of the life of the member institutions and complement their educational objectives.” It notes that Centennial Conference schools see a larger percentage of students playing sports than in the Big Ten or Southeastern conferences, and that Centennialcolleges have a high four-year graduation rates among athletes. Ursinus is a founding member of the Centennial Conference, along with Swarthmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Franklin & Marshall, Dickinson, Gettysburg and Muhlenberg colleges in Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University and McDaniel and Washington colleges in Maryland.
