Job/Networking Fair Continues to Attract Employers

The Ursinus College Career Services Job, Internship and Networking Fair will host 100 employers – a record high.

The annual fair is always an important networking and recruiting event so that students can learn about area organizations, positions and internships. This year, however, students have a greater advantage, as employer attendance has swelled. The Feb. 20 Fair is open to current Ursinus students.

The number of organizations registered for the fair has increased substantially, from about 40 several years ago to 70 last year. The increase is probably due to several reasons, according to Carla Rinde, Director of Career Services.

First, she noted, job market economists suggest that the outlook for jobs is improving slightly.  “Most importantly,” she said, “the market for young people seems to be getting stronger.” According to a survey of employers conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), employers anticipate hiring 13 percent more Class of 2013 college graduates than they hired from the Class of 2012.

Also, she noted, “the increase in numbers is also in part due to the quality and reputation of Ursinus students and the relationships Ursinus has established with employers.  Employers attending last year’s fair were very pleased with the students they met.“

For example, an employer wrote that the Ursinus students “were very poised, professional, intelligent, articulate men and women.” Another wrote that “the students here absolutely blew me out of the water with their professionalism and eagerness to move forward looking towards their professional careers.” The Career Services Office held a number of workshops during the year on resume writing and tips for meeting potential employers.

A relatively new position, Associate Director for Employer Relations, held by Sharon Hansen Powers, has allowed the office to better focus on creating and nurturing relationships with employer partners.

The schedule for the job and internship fair is:

  • 10:00 AM Employer Registration/Exhibit Set-up Opens
  • 11:00 AM Employer Luncheon with Ursinus Faculty/Staff
  • 12:00 PM Fair Opens to Students
  • 2:00 PM Fair Concludes
