Career Services Recognized for LGBTQ Services

The Ursinus College Career Services Office was recently awarded the Gold level of certification from OUT for Work as a place where Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer students can find career services.

Out At Work Career Service Award“We were very excited when we learned that we were given a GOLD certification from Out for Work,” said Career Services Director Carla Rinde. “We
have received a bronze level certification for the past few years so we are extremely  pleased with our
progress.  The Career Services Office serves
our diverse student body, providing guidance and resources that help them to  realize their career- related goals.  It is critical that we  provide resources and support to the  LGBTQ  community at Ursinus – so that we can enhance student knowledge of career related issues,  encourage strategic decision making , and help students anticipate the challenges they may face in the workplace.”

Out for Work is a national non-profit organization that provides programs, resources, and services to LBGTQ students in the cultivation and enhancement of skills to explore career options, master job search techniques and strategies, and research employment opportunities.

Out for Work began its Career Center Certification Program in 2009 in part to help academic institutions improve the quality of the support they provide to LGBTQ students. The program annually assesses the quality, quantity and availability of career resource materials for LGBT students. Based on their responses to the assessment, participating institutions receive an A+ gold, gold, silver or bronze ranking and have access to various tools, resources and materials they can use to improve their support of LGBT students.

Ursinus received a gold rating in part due to its website, which includes a collection of search engines geared towards LGBTQ students, as well as links to networks and scholarships, such as the National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals.

The Certification includes access for Ursinus students to the LGBTQ Career Resources Library, which has career related information including job searching, resumes, interviews and coming out at work. The Myrin Library houses LBGTQ books, magazines, links, and videos, which are all accessible to Ursinus students.

Additional benefits of the certification include inclusion in the annual OUT for Work Career Center Certification Program Report, networking opportunities with other OUT for Work certified campus career centers and discounts for faculty, staff, and students to attend OUT for Work conferences and event.
