Ursinus students, faculty and staff can purchase one or more souvenir ducks at the Ursinus bookstore and participate in the first-ever Rubber Ducky Regatta on Perkiomen Creek May 4. The Regatta is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. near the Perkiomen Bridge Hotel, ending at the Perkiomen Creek Bridge. The race will begin at 2 p.m.; winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m. You don’t need to be present to win.
Ducks are $5 each and the souvenir duck you buy is yours to keep. Each time an individual buys a duck, they will be given a number, which is the number of their corresponding race duck which will navigate the creek. Top prizes donated by local businesses will be awarded for the first 30 winning ducks. Prizes range from gift certificates to a grand prize of $250 Visa Card for the fastest duck.
In addition to the Ursinus College bookstore, ducks can be bought from many participating local businesses. For a complete list, visit www.collegevilledevelopment.org.
During the month before the race, there will be an ongoing contest on both the CEDC Facebook and website pages where individuals can win up $100 in cash and prizes if you can guess which local business one of the ducks is visiting.
In addition to the duck race, the Rubber Ducky Regatta features a tasty line-up from local chefs, including Phamous Phil’s BBQ and a Pig Roast, as well as live music and dance including spirited performances from the Dance Depot. For kids, there are plenty of water, fish and duck-themed games, contests and prizes in a Kid’s Area.
The event focuses on the Perkiomen Creek as the ducks as they race (or rather slowly float) toward the finish line at the Perkiomen Creek Bridge. The Perkiomen Watershed Alliance will provide information about the creek and how we can participate in programs to keep the stream healthy.
Also of high interest is the restoration of the Perkiomen Bridge Hotel. Tom Crawford, the new owner, will be on hand to discuss his plans to bring the hotel back to life.
The Collegeville Fire Company, which is in charge of rescues on the creek, will be present with their emergency vehicles and boat.
Special thanks to Meridian Bank, which is the sponsor of the Rubber Ducky Regatta. The event is a fundraiser for the Collegeville Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) to raise funds to be able to continue to organize family-friendly events for Collegeville. The non-profit also maintain a community calendar of everything that is happening in the community.
