Electro-acoustic Composition Performed at Festival

Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Garrett Hope had his electro-acoustic composition, Schizocosa, performed at the 2013 PARMA New Music Festival/SCI Region 1 Conference on August 17 in Portsmouth, N.H. The composition was a three-way collaboration between biologist Eileen Hebets at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and choreographer Susan Levine, also at UNL, that used samples of spider-generated sounds from Dr. Hebets’ lab to create the music. All sounds in the composition originated from the spiders, but Dr. Hope manipulated many of them in the pitch and time domains. A recording of the work can be heard on his web site (electroacoustic) and the dance can be viewed here.
