Melissa Thompson, producer of Greenpeace Video, will host a screening of the documentary Los Monstruos (Monsters) on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. in Pfahler Hall, Room 100. The event is free and open to the public.
The 45-minute film tells the story of Leila Mendez, a resident of Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, and her fight to shut down the Fisk and Crawford coal plants in her community. Mendez, a volunteer with PERRO (Pilsen Environmental Rights and Reform Organization), was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 1998 and believes pollution from the plants was the cause. After the screening, Thompson will discuss the role of documentary in advocacy and social justice work.
