Ursinus has become more sustainable by offering a Zipcar car sharing program on campus and to the surrounding community. A partnership with Zipcar, Inc., the leading car sharing network, was to launch Aug. 21, to offer a convenient transportation option around the clock for students, faculty, and staff ages 18 and older, as well as members of the local community ages 21 and over.
Ursinus College will initially offer two Ford Focus model vehicles. The Zipcars will have designated parking spots located in a campus lot near the Wismer Center for convenient pick-up and return. Zipcars are available on demand and can be easily reserved and accessed.
An Ursinus College membership is $25, with rates for Zipcar vehicles on campus starting at $7.50 per hour and $69 per day. After the first year, members will pay an annual membership fee of $35. Gas, insurance, and up to 180 miles of driving per day are included in Zipcar rates, and cars can be reserved for as little as an hour or for multiple days. Ursinus College students, faculty and staff can join Zipcar at www.zipcar.com/ursinus. Collegeville community residents can join as well.
Sustainability Program Coordinator Brandon Hoover is excited about providing an additional transportation option to the community. “Addressing rising costs of transportation and their resulting greenhouse gas emissions requires creative thinking and diversified transportation options,” said Hoover, who is coordinating the program. “Public transportation isn’t always easy, and not everyone is comfortable riding a bike, but this doesn’t mean we all need personal automobiles.”
Participating members with smartphones, including iPhones and Android devices, may download the Zipcar mobile application to make reservations, lock and unlock the vehicles and honk the horn to help locate the vehicle. Reservations can also be made over the phone or on Zipcar’s website.
“The new Zipcar program on the Ursinus College campus will provide students, faculty and staff with new levels of freedom at an affordable rate,” said Katelyn Lopresti, general manager for Zipcar University. “Members can use Zipcars to run errands, attend job interviews and internships or get away for the weekend.”
